Clay Shirky: How Social Media can make history
• During the 2008 elections there was “Video the Vote” which was a safeguard for voter suppression. Where voters would take pictures or videos on their phones if they thought voter suppression was occurring. This is an excellent example of how media is becoming social.
• Media being social-→Innovation can now happen anywhere.
Innovation can happen anywhere
1. Print Press
2. Telegraph/telephone→ one to one communication
3. Photos, recorded sound & film
4. Radio & Television-→ One to many communication
All these technological advances lead to massive changes in society. Now it is the Internet: native support for conversations. Many to many communication.
• Gilmore says the consumers are now the consumers
• Now media is global, social, ubiquitous and cheap.
• People can now get information but most importantly talk to one another.

I think the way in which different countries utilize our Internet resources is very interesting. I feel that, as a public sphere, the Internet should be availible for free usage for EVERYONE but obviously that is not the reality in certain parts of the world. This is especially relevant when you compare things such as the ‘video the vote’ program in the US which attempted to safeguard our democratic process and ensure integrity within our political society. However, compare that system to the Chinese government’s strict regulations which prevent the spread of vital information and open public forum through social media such as Facebook and Google-type search engines- all for the sake of government control and repression of free speech. I have such a hard time accepting this blockade in the modern world but it does not seem that any progress is being made towards opening these progressive outlets in certain areas.
