Our group has created a Google Map to map the locations of all of the Fresh Bodegas in New York. The map is embedded on our blog. I’m also embedding it below if you want to take a look!

Thank you for posting the screen shots. Can you post the links (in the same update) as well? The Twitter feed is also embedded and showing in the sidebar of this blog.

    Fresh Foods Update

Yesterday I visited one of the Fresh Bodegas in Bed-Stuy, took
pictures, met with it’s manager and planned on conducting a phone
interview with him later in the week. Last week, Amy got in touch
with a Free Press writer who was planning on interviewing us about the project but unfortunately, late last night, the writer emailed us with the news that her editors scrapped the article/feature. Last night, our
group members met with one of the coordinators/directors of GrowNYC
and sat in on the “Volunteer Orientation” meeting with a handful of
other individuals. It was really informative and covered the
organization’s various divisions, statistics, and policies. We will continue to stay in
touch with Laura from Fresh Bodegas, design our blog and conduct research.

Hi Daria, thank you for the update, it sounds like the Fresh Foods group is making a lot of progress. It seems to me that at this point you have enough information to begin deciding how to use it. Also, the Free Press may still decide to cover your work once your project is completed. A student group project in and of itself is not news as there are so many of them. Produce a work that stands out may be.

    FRESH FOODS UPDATE

Wednesday afternoon I had a chat with Laura of Fresh Bodegas (I’ve sent the recording to my group-mates) and explained our project to her, and in turn she laid out somethings that she could use our help with. We will have another chat with her on the 11th when we attend the workshop. Emily set up our twitter page (@freshfoodsnyc) and our blog is in the process of being set up. Daria is going to visit one of the participating bodegas as a bit of field research. We will begin posting on our blog over the weekend, as we are researching for content now. I also have to contact the PR person for Fresh Bodega for a proper interview. More to come.

Hi Amy, thank you for the update. Please post to this blog what Laura told you so that we can give you some feedback. Also, I don’t want you to be in charge of all the updates. Daria and Emily should take care of the upcoming updates. I am glad the Twitter account is up and running, I have embedded the feed in our blog. Please post something as soon as possible so that can test it. What software are you going to use for blogging?

    FRESH FOODS INITIATIVE [UPDATE]

Emily, Daria and I have chosen to work with the Fresh Bodega Project because it appeals to us and they are very accessible. We have direct contact information, and they’ve proven to be swift in responding to email. I’ve just emailed a second person from the organization and waiting to hear back. As I mentioned in class, we will see what Fresh Bodega needs and we will help them in those areas. We will also pitch a story on Fresh Bodega to the New School Free press. To incorpoate a new media component, the three of us will start a food blog that will relate to the agenda of the Fresh Bodega Project. On this blog we will feature Fresh Bodega, discuss the issue of lack of nutrition in some urban areas, we will also have recipes that use ingredients that can be found at Bodegas that are part of the Fresh Bodega project. We were also thinking of starting a twitter to promote our agenda. We hope to connect to other people’s twitters and blogs, so that other people can retweet/reblog what we have to say and spread awareness. Ultimately, we’d like to generate followers and build a community who feel strongly about integrating fresh foods in some of these NYC areas. We are also still flushing out ideas…

It’s great you made contact with them, Amy! In my opinion you should try not to produce a blog that is a simple PR campaign for Fresh Bodegas, but something that addresses a range of issues including that of affordability. As I said in class, perhaps the first useful step to take would be to pay visit to some of these bodegas to check out how they work, what kind of customers they attract, and what are the limits or obstacles they bump into.

      Live Culture Company: http://livecultureco.com/
Once again I may be making a comment or suggestion that might be a bit off topic. But, I think this might be a good one. My good friends sister works for this company, based in California, called Live Culture Company. Here’s a description of what they do, taken from their website: “Live Culture Company has a strong track record of creating market-based change, overcoming challenges, and developing creative and viable business and program plans for values-driven food businesses and for businesses seeking to integrate quality food into their work.” Although this idea is slightly different from Fresh Bodegas and the organizations you may be working with, I think this idea and company could be well adapted towards forwarding your goals. They not only promote the Slow Food movement and the eating of better foods, but also establishing local businesses. When looking at a relatively lower-class neighborhood such as Bedsty, I think this company’s goal is extremely positive and productive towards the bettering of the residents, physically and economically.
