    Hi all,

just a quick update to let you know that Gabriella Coleman will be speaking about the use of humour in Anonymous’ actions this Thursday at The Hemispheric Institute at NYU. This will be your last chance of seeing her giving a talk in NYC on Anonymous for awhile as she will be moving to Canada this Spring.

Three web sites that archive a lot of information about Internet memes are

    http://knowyourmeme.com/
    http://ohinternet.com/
    http://encyclopediadramatica.ch/ (NSFW)

You can search them for relevant keywords and use tons of images for your own project.

    A Week without Google

    Hi all,

starting now and until next Monday we will attempt to make it through a whole week without using any Google service. Not Google Search, not Google Talk, not Google Video, not Google Docs, not Google Maps, not Google Earth, not Google News, not Google Groups, not Youtube, not Google Video, not Blogger, not Picasa, not Google Calendar, not Google Checkout, not iGoogle, not Google Translate, not Google Chrome, if you have an Android phone, you are not allowed to use Google services with it, talk and text only… you get the point.

It’s not going to be easy and hence we will not attempt to create an unfeasible challenge. We will keep a promise to each other to follow some rules:

    1. Whenever we are passively exposed to Google content (an embedded Google video, map, and so on…) we post that link on the blog, explaining how we stumbled into it.

    2. Whenever we break and use a Google service, we report about it on the blog in the form of a comment to this post.

We will also try to support each other in the process by taking a series of technical steps:

    1. If you use google.com as a homepage make sure to redirect your search to another search engine such as Yahoo, Bing or any other search engine. You are required to do that asap.

    2. Every time you are about to use Google, and find a way around it, try to propose the alternative to the class either by posting the link to the alternative in a comment.

    4. Please share your tactics on the blog. Let’s work together to try to make it.

    5. Previous classes found the use of this Firefox plugin useful, so if you find you just can’t trust yourself use it to block any Google domain. In the options add the following urls:

    *.google.*
    *.youtube.*
    *.googlegroups.*
    *.blogspot.*
    *.blogger.*
    *.gmail.*
    *.picasa.*

If you know of other Google-owned web sites and services (there are plenty not indicated in the list above) please mention them on this blog. This is trust based only, but the student who will manage to take this challenge on and make it through the week will win the Mediated Subjectivity medal of honor.

Good luck, we are going to need it!

    Hi Amy,

talking with friends about your proposal I found out about this CSA in Bed-Stuy http://www.bedstuyfarmshare.org/ that accepts food stamps, makes discounts to low-income families and seems to have a holistic view of what it means to provide healthy food in a low-income neighborhood. They are also trying to raise funding for a print publication called Eating Healthy in Bed-Stuy https://ioby.org/project/eating-healthy-bed-stuy. You may be interested in checking them out and see whether they need or want some help.

      Thanks Marco!
I think I may contact the Bedstuy Farm Share and get on board with them. I think the idea of food-stamps in farmer’s markets is what I will focus on.

      update:
I’ve contacted the Bedstuy Farm Share, just waiting for a reply. Does anyone know if The New School Press accepts contributions (written pieces) from non-members of the paper? I’d love to do a story about this organization.

    Hello everyone!

in order to begin posting you need first to be added to this blog as an editor. In the upcoming hours/days you will receive an email on your New Schooll account whose subject either reads “[Mediated Subjectivity ]: You’re added to this blog” (if you have a WordPress account) or invites you to go through a registration process.

Please make sure to create a user name that somehow reminds us of your birth name.

After you have completed the registration process you should also post a head shot of yourself on Gravatar.com. Your pic will appear next to your comments and posts allowing the rest of the class to match your name to your face and make the conversation more personal and informal.

If you need instructions on how to do that you can either go straight to gravatar or just check the How To section of this blog, which also contains instructions on how to post in WordPress.

    Happy blogging,
    Marco

Forgot to say that we could improve the graphics of this blog A LOT! For instance, we could add a nice background image to the header. Parsons students and anyone who likes playing with Web images are very welcome to submit one. Default background images for this theme are 980 x 120, but they can also be smaller.
